What is the local pack?
it’s the highly optimized local service from Google that delivers local business related to your query. It’s right at the top of the page so it’s very important to be there.
Because these are location-dependent - you can’t really optimize for the term it’s all about the location. So "whale watching Harvey Bay" or "whale watching experience near me" (if you were in Harvey Bay) would yield the same results.
So as local travelers start to look for things to do, you obviously want to be found. And FYI, all this work will be useful when overseas travelers start to arrive.
Google says three things matter:
Relevance, Distance, and Prominence
How do you optimize?
1. Make sure your Google My Business is up to date and complete.
2. Deal with your citations - where are you listed and is this complete, up to date, and are the business details consistent?
3. Get Google reviews. Most tourism businesses have focussed only on Trip Advisor. Simply make sure you send some customers to your Google My Business for reviews as well.
4. Build links with other good quality local businesses.
